Incorporating a stream of innovative design improvement ideas coming from leading designers in Europe, FMI has over many months researched, designed, improved and now prototyped a magnificent new suite of premier aluminium windows and doors expressly designed with New Zealand conditions in mind.

The CHallEnge

Incorporated the new suite was a weather slot that was going to be difficult and time consuming using traditional ways of routing aluminium. The slots were in the side wall at the bottom of a large aluminium extrusion. Some fabricators were using CNC router technology and others were using manual feed copy routers. FMI needed a good solution for both methods to be able to cut the slot fast and perfectly cleanly over and over again.

THE SOLUTION

Tungsten & Tool were able to design and specify a unique T Milling cutter. These are made in Europe from HSSE material. This is HSS with 8% cobalt in the alloy.

The HSSE proved tough enough to handle the hand fed operations, hard enough to stay sharp for a long time and the cobalt additive helped the steel cope with the heat build by improving chip evacuation thereby reducing machining time. The 8 alternate shear angle cutting teeth cut fast and very clean.
