Saw Blade Terminology

Saw Blade Terminology

FLAT TOP
(FT)

Square top a top specifically used for ripping cuts and slotting cuts in solid wood and aluminium.

ALTERNATE TOP BEVEL

(ATB)

Alternating right and left top bevels. For use on General-purpose blades for rip and crosscut on wood and plywood.

ALTERNATE TOP BEVEL MODIFIED
(H-ATB)

Steep top alternate bevel teeth for cutting veneered board and plywood.

COMBINATION TOOTH (4+1) (H-ATB)

Groups of 4 alternate tooth plus 1 flat (raker) tooth

TRIPLE CHIP (TCG)

Alternate high triple ground tooth and Flat raker tooth. Used for cutting Non-Ferrous metals and harder materials like MDF, OSB and plastics.

CALIFORNIA TRIPLE CHIP (TCG)

Alternate high triple ground tooth and Flat raker tooth. Used for cutting Non-Ferrous metals and harder materials like MDF, OSB and plastics.

CONE FORM (CONICAL)

Used on scoring blades for Beam Saws.

HOLLOW GROUND (HG)

Hollow face grind used for cutting Melamine faced board. Often used on wall saws etc.

HOOK (RAKE) ANGLE

Determines the angle of penetration of the tooth into the material. Soft materials generally need Hook angles from +18° to +22°. Hard materials about +6°. Aluminium and melamine blades often require various angles e.g. -6° to +7°

TOP CLEARANCE ANGLE

This angle varies according to the material from 12° to 15°

1. TOP BEVEL ANGLE

2. RADIAL SIDE ANGLE

  1. This angle controls the penetration of the tooth into the material being cut. ranges from 6° to 22°. Generally, 10°
  2. Assists tooth penetration by allowing clearance down the sides of the tooth. 1° to 2°

KERF ('B')

PLATE('C')

  • B. Width of saw tooth.
  • C. Thickness of the steel body of the saw Expansion Slots These allow the saw to expand and contract under load or heat to prevent twisting and wavy cuts.

COPPER PLUGS

These help to reduce air turbulence and noise of the saw when cutting. Further advances include laser slots and Thermoelastic reeds.

BORE, PIN-HOLES, KEYWAYS

These refer to the actual fitting of the saw to the drive: diameter of the centre hole (b), Pinholes for any drive pins (PH) For example 2/10/60 means 2 x10mm pinholes on a 60mm circle.

Any keyways are designated by their number, width and depth and are machined to match the drive arbor of the machine.
