What happens when Toolholders get worn?
Yes, even tool holders get worn!
They’re under huge tension and pressure when cutting and temperatures can get up to 180 degrees Celsius!
The two main areas of wear are:
1) The tapers. When these wear, they don’t match with the opposite tapers in the CNC. The grip is no longer concentric and also can mean the collet doesn’t fit the taper as well.
2) The collet nut. These become distorted and the threads worn which means that your collet isn’t evenly pressed into the tool holder.
Both these mean
• Faster tool wear
• Premature spindle bearing wear
• Collet damage
• Broken shanks
Check your toolholders, it maybe a time for a refresh for your main tools that do a ton of work!
